Facts and Statistics about Accredited Bachelor Degree
The Sloan Consortium oversees online schools. The Sloan Consortium is a conglomerate of organizations and institutions committed to fostering a high level of quality in online education. This group wants to promote collaboration between instructors and students. Lets look at some statistics outlining the trends in online degrees, specifically, enrollment, ontogeny predictions and teaching information in relationship to online degrees. Growing by Degree: Online Education in the United States 2005 has all of this information and more. You can take a look at the information complied regarding online learning.
Based on these statistics, online enrollment enjoyed an increase from 1.98 million student enrolled in 2003 to 2.35 million students enrolled in 2004. This is a massive growth in enrollment for only a calendar year. This development in online accredited bachelor degree programs is phenomenal and speaks to the need for more convenient degree programs for the nontraditional student. This growth is over ten times what projected by the National Center for Education Statistics for for the entire post secondary education system. In other words, online growth beat the growth of enrollment for higher ed as a whole, including traditional campuses.
Growing by Degrees: Online Education in the United States 2005 also reports that there is a a higher incidence of core sources as primary curriculum sources in the online community versus the face-to-face community. 65% of online schools said core sources are used to create their curriculum versus only 62% of face-to-face institutions using core sources to structure their coursework.
Traditional face-to-face institutions are seeking more online avenues to grow their overall enrollment and reach more potential students. This desire is growing. 67% of those institutions reported this in 2003 and in 2005 that has increased to 74%. Private colleges are slower to embrace online avenues as a means to reach students, but those institutions are on the rise as well. In 2003 35% of private schools expressed this desire and in 2005 that figure rose to 41%.
Many people are earning their accredited bachelor degree online and then break into various careers, and industries. More and more institutions of higher learning initiate online programs. Despite this, a small number of Chief Academic Officers believe that the prestige of an online degree will ever enjoy the legitimacy of a traditional degree. In 2003, only 28% of CAO believed this would happen and in 2005 a mere 31% believe that to be true.
While we can see that more and more students are taking the online route, will employers accept and value this means of getting a degree? Will a potential employee with an online degree stack up against a student with a degree obtained traditionally? Vault, Inc., one of the biggest online career direction services, oversaw a study online, which showed that 85% of employers surveyed believe that an online degree is more acceptable today than they were even five years ago. So the tide is turning.
